If a specific page on an Internet site doesn't load for some reason or if a link is not working, the site visitor will see an error page with some generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the Internet site, that may make the visitor leave your Internet site. A likely solution in such a case is a function offered by some web hosting providers - the ability to set your own custom-made error pages which will have exactly the same layout as your Internet site and that can contain any text or images which you want based on the particular error. There are four common errors which could take place and they involve these so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your browser sends a bad request to the hosting server and it can't be processed; 401, if you're supposed to log in to see a page, but you haven't done so yet; 403, if you don't have a permission to view a specific page; and 404, if a link that you've clicked leads to a file which does not exist. In all of these situations, visitors shall be able to see your custom content rather than a generic error page.
Custom Error Pages in Hosting
You can set up custom made error pages for all of your domains or subdomains. The function is supported by all hosting plans which we provide, so when you log in to the Hepsia Control Panel and check out the Hosted Domains section, you may click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up that will be displayed, you can select the type of error page that should show up - a default one from our system, a conventional Apache server page or a customized one. For the last mentioned option, you have to specify the URL to the page, so when you use custom made pages, you must upload the files in your web hosting account first. One other way is to use an .htaccess file positioned inside the domain or subdomain folder with a line for every error type. The correct syntax can be located in our Knowledge Base, so you can use this feature even if you don't have any previous experience.
Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers
All of the semi-dedicated servers that we offer support tailor-made error pages and it will not take more than a couple of clicks inside your Hepsia web hosting Control Panel to use this functionality. The option can be found in the Hosted Domains section of your CP where you will need to enter the links to the custom-made files via simple drop-down menus and an easy to use interface. Needless to say, you have to upload them inside your account before that. In case you don't need to use this feature at some point, you can disable it just as fast and select an Apache server page or a default page from our system to be viewable when your visitors encounter an error. If you prefer, you can also use an .htaccess file to enable the customized error pages. The file should have a specific line of code plus a link for every single error type and you may find an example of the entire content for all four error types in our Help section.
